The Challenge
Apple Books is a well-known digital reading platform, yet not the most popular. In the top 10 most used e-book shops in the US, a whopping 79% of surveyed individuals said they used Amazon. Apple Books claims second place with a mere 35%. Apple Books needs to close the gap with its competitor and emerge as the top choice for e-reading.
The Insight
In 2008, Amazon purchased and shut down Shelfari, a book cataloguing social platform. Similarly, in 2013, they purchased Goodreads, effectively dominating the book sharing/online bookshelf industry.
The Opportunity
Apple Books could become a major player in online bookshelfs/libraries. It already has all of necessary data of what you’re reading, your reading goal, your progress, and your reviews. All that’s needed is to provide a social platform for readers to catalogue and share their reading activity right in the app.
